Frequently Asked Questions
What Is a Home Renovation Loan?
Cost of renovating a home in Singapore can be expensive. Whether you want to make improvements to your newly purchased resale flat or you want to upgrade your surroundings, a home renovation loan can provide you with the funds you need.
Renovation loans are special-purpose loans designed to finance your house renovation projects. It is different from home loans that are meant for financing your mortgage. Renovation loans are also different from personal loans since the latter can be used for a wide variety of purposes.
Unlike a personal loan, a renovation loan has certain restrictions on the types of enhancements where you can use the loan amount. Renovation loans can be only used for renovation-related works and do not cover expenses like furnishing, artwork, and smart home devices.
What Are the Uses of a Home Renovation Loan?
Renovation loans are strictly used for house renovations, including:
- Electrical and wiring works
- Built-in cabinets, carpentry works
- Flooring and tiling
- Painting and redecorating works
- Structural alterations
- Basic bathroom fittings
- Installation of Solar Panels
A home renovation loan can’t be used to pay for any other purpose other than renovation.
Why Get a Home Renovation Loan?
For one, the best renovation loans have more affordable interest rates than credit cards. As such, the interest payments are much more affordable.
Secondly, the funds from your renovation loan can strictly be used only for house renovations so you won’t be tempted to spend it on other items.
Lastly, you can spread the big chunk of the costs over 12 comfortable payments, allowing you to upgrade and spruce up your home with minimal financial strain.
How Long Will It Take To Get My Home Renovation Loan Approved?
Bugis Credit’s home renovation loan application process is quick and easy. Simply submit your application online or hop on a call with our team. The application will be processed within 1 hour and you’ll get your cash as soon as the agreement has been signed.
Is a Home Renovation Loan an Unsecured Loan?
Yes, Bugis Credit’s home renovation loan is an unsecured loan. It does not require any type of collateral. It is also subject to a few restrictions, such as citizenship and income levels. That said, instead of relying on your assets as security, Bugis Credit will approve your renovation loan based on your creditworthiness.
How Much Home Renovation Loan Can I Borrow?
The maximum loan amount you can borrow will depend on several factors, including citizenship and income levels.
Singapore citizens or Permanent Residents with an annual income of less than S$20,000 can only borrow up to S$3,000 with us. If the annual income is at least S$20,000 and above, the maximum renovation loan amount is 6 months’ worth of monthly income.
Foreigners or expats working in Singapore who are earning less than S$10,000 a year can only borrow up to $500. If earning over S$10,000 but less than S$20,000, they can borrow up to S$3,000. If their annual income is at least S$20,000 and above, they can borrow up to 6 times their monthly income.
Note that the interest rate is capped at 4% per month regardless of your income level and the loan tenure is from 6 to 12 months.
Can I Borrow a Home Renovation Loan With a Bad Credit Score?
Most banks are more likely to approve renovation loan applications from existing home loan customers with good credit scores. That said, borrowers are usually rejected by traditional banks for having a low or bad credit score.
However, even with a less-than-stellar credit score, there is still hope! Bugis Credit will take your income, the outstanding balance on other loans (if any), and your overall financial situation into consideration and responsibly assess how much you can borrow.
